Himmotthan, under its education Initiative has started Pre-elementary and elementary education projects in 5 Blocks of 4 Districts (Nainital, Bageshwar, Tehri-Garhwal and Chamoli) in Uttarakhand. This is aimed at improving learning outcomes of students, building life-skills, the introduction of Information Technology and involving community in management of schools. In the next three years the Himmotthan Education Initiative will focus on learning and development needs of about 5,000 children in 66 Govt. Primary Schools and 20 Angan Wadi Centers (AWCs) through information technology, English language, school library and training of 100 Teachers along with strengthening of 100 community institutions. To take this project further Himmotthan, with the Financial support of The Hans Foundation (THF) dovetailed WaSH with the ongoing Himmotthan Education Initiative, then reaching a total of 86 locations (66 Schools + 20 Angan Wadies) to improve attendance by at least 10% (especially targeting the girl child) and reducing water borne diseases by 90% of the attendant child population. This is being achieved through the establishment of proper sanitation facilities and potable water at every project schools/ Angan Wadi Centres, which is directly benefitting above 5000 children. Under the 03 years E-WaSH Programme (2015 – 2018); Hand washing stations, garbage pits, soak pits and pot cleaning stations also developed under E-WaSH programme. E-WaSH program is one of extensive support school wash programme which has left better impact in the lives of more than 5000 students. 50 schools are being covered under ‘WaSH in School’ programme supported by Hindustan Petroleum Ltd. in 3 blocks of 02 Districts (24 Jaunpur & 16 Bhilangana- Tehri and 10 Raipur – Dehradun). Under which toilets are renovated, hand washing station, garbage pits, soak pits constructed, white wash on constructed units and wall paintings done. Offline water purifier is also installed in each 50 schools.

WaSH booklets, message stickers, Pla Cards, banners, Hoardings given at each school and IEC/BCC campaign on WaSH is also being implemented.

42 Schools covered under ‘Follow The Liters’ programme financially supported by ‘Vestergaard Frandsen SA, Switzerland. Under this programme of one year (Aug 2017 – July 2018) 129 offline Life Straw Community water filters are provided including 3 Block Education Offices (Chamba, Jaunpur – Tehri and Garur – Bageshwar). Education on WaSH components through direct interactions with 11343 students (11 schools at Chamba with 2078 students, 19 schools at Jaunpur-Thatyur with 4112 students & 12 schools at Garur – Bageshwar with 5153 students). This program has left good impact in view of safe potable water and hygiene.

Construction of Toilet Project under 'Hans School Modernization Programme' funded by ‘The Hans Foundation’. It has to be implemented in 37 Govt schools/ Colleges for construction and renovations of twin toilets and complexes and 01 college in 10 Districts of Uttarakhand. These schools/colleges are being covered under Rastriya Madhymik Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA) by the financial support of THF through Himmotthan Society. This programme is for 9 month only. Under this programme sanitation facilities to be made fully functional for the girls and boys of the schools/colleges.

13 schools are being covered under Block Open Defecation Free (BODF) project within Gangolihat block of Pithoragarh District. Here schools to be provided WaSH support by construction and renovations of toilets, garbage pits, soak pits, hand wash facilities as well as repairing of existing pipelines for connecting water supply till schools. As BODF project has been implemented in whole Gangolihat block (312 villages) for construction of sanitation units for making whole block Open Defecation Free. Therefore 13 schools are being covered for availing WaSH facilities with white wash, wall paintings and IEC/BCC cum awareness activities on WaSH in all 13 schools for 1047 students.
