Introduction

Himmotthan is an entity registered in 2007 under the Societies Act. It was set up by Tata Trusts as a resource organisation to incubate, innovate, support and manage Himmotthan Pariyojana. Himmotthan works in the state of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Leh region and is focused on working among the rural mountain communities by developing sustainable community owned enterprises linked to livestock, agriculture, non-timber forest produce, and intervening for access to safe water, sanitation and energy. Job Purpose

Provide able leadership to Himmotthan

Key Accountabilities


A. Strategy Development

  • Define strategic direction of Himmotthan for next 5 to 10 years to make lasting contribution in building Himmotthan as a leading organisation addressing social, ecological, economic challenges in Central Himalayan region
  • Work with the Board, partners, experts to arrive at a roadmap for organisation’s work consolidating current work and developing new areas of work
  • Once approved, by the Board develop an implementation plan for putting strategy into action

B. Partnerships and Programme Implementation

  • Ensure that all field programmes are well aligned with the overall strategy
  • Develop partnerships with civil society organisations, research institutions, community based organisations to take Himmotthan’s strategy forward
  • Ensure quality execution of interventions in the field programmes
  • Provide regular handholding support and guidance to team members to ensure quality execution at the field level. Take responsibility for delivering and reporting on their grant deliverables as per the original proposals at regular levels
  • Coordination with Tata Trusts and ensuring smooth communication and transparency in financial reporting
  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative technology-driven solutions
  • Oversee budgets and be responsible for professional and timely reporting on progress to donor agencies including the govt

C. Resource mobilisation

  • Develop proposals, plan programmes and raise funds from donors, government, CSRs to develop new programmes and fulfill co-financing commitments in existing programmes
  • Diversify funding sources of Himmotthan

D. Research, Networking and Advocacy

  • Identify areas for knowledge building aligned to the strategy. Commission, conduct and disseminate research studies
  • Work closely with the Policy function, work to supplement and leverage key government programmes to reach the communities and bring field experiences to inform policy through sustained advocacy with other like minded organistions
  • Ensure that reliable information is generated from programmes to support the development of communications materials, and evidence based advocacy along with systematic dissemination at various important platforms
  • Build and grow network of key players working in the Himalayan region that shares ideas, resources and collaborates for cross learning and wider reach

E. Governance

  • Ensure all statutory compliances for Himmotthan
  • Maintain highest levels of transparency and accountability
  • Ensure quality reporting to the Governing Board on agreed upon frequency

F. Organisation Building, Management & Leadership

  • Work towards strengthening the capacity of the team and build a professional, partnership, learning oriented culture within the organization
  • Strengthen Human Resource function that invests in learning, growth and development of all team members
  • Ensure quality reporting to the Governing Board on agreed upon frequency

Eligibilities and requirements


Education

Minimum of Post-graduate degree in Management/Agriculture/Rural Development/Social Sciences or an equivalent field, from a reputed University/Institute is desirable.


Experience

At least 15 years of relevant work experience including leadership experience in the development sector is desirable.


Skills, Competencies and Experience
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in programme management, organizational development
  • Strong HR skills. Previous experience of managing and developing a team and the ability to lead, motivate, and develop others
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing in English and Hindi
  • An openness to listen and to be able to improve
  • Ability to delegate and build a second line of leadership
  • An in depth understanding of national and international development issues
  • Experience of working with government, donors, community institutions and NGOs along with an understanding of the issues involved
  • Proven ability to work with partner organisations and build network
  • Substantial experience and knowledge of effective financial and budgetary control, project management, and securing and managing grants
  • Ability to analyse information, evaluate options, and to think and plan strategically Experience in the area of policy advocacy and action research (desirable)
